Why Journaling is Essential to an Herbalist: Herbal Rituals for Alignment

Today, I want to share why observation is essential for anyone learning plant medicine. At the root of true herbal healing is cultivating a connection between the mind, body, and soul through the aid of plants. It's not just about treating symptoms but becoming aware of when your body is out of alignment. Herbalism is about creating health, not simply treating ailments. To achieve this, you must be in tune with yourself to know and feel when one of your systems needs assistance.

These feelings may be subtle, often going unnoticed. However, if you train yourself to slow down and tune in, you'll find that your body speaks a bit louder. You'll begin to understand the little indications that may give clues to imbalance. These can manifest in ways such as changes in digestion or an acne breakout. Or perhaps in even subtler ways like the feeling you get when you wake up in the morning. Do you wake up tired? Maybe you find it hard to shake off sleep? These are all indications of imbalance in our bodies. Noticing these is the first step toward healing, which brings us to today's topic: why journaling is essential for an herbalist.

The Importance of Journaling for Herbalists

I find that the easiest and most effective way to tune into my body and notice its patterns is through journaling. When you write down what you notice in your body, you are syncing up with yourself and your body’s natural rhythms. By gaining awareness, you can address where you truly need healing. So, get a beautiful journal, one that lights you up whenever you see it, and start recording your observations.

In my herbal journal, I like to document my encounters with plants. I keep track of every herb I work with and how my body reacts to each one. Herbalism is a very personalized practice—everyone's experience is different. What herbs work for my body might not work the same for you. That is why it is so important to listen to what your body is telling you!

Choose an herb to connect with

Selecting a specific herb to work with is a crucial first step in this ritual. I suggest you work with one herb at a time to really connect with its energy and properties. This focused approach allows you to fully experience the unique qualities of each plant, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation. Take your time in choosing an herb that resonates with you or one that you feel drawn to. It could be an herb you are curious about, one that aligns with your current needs, or even one that has historical significance in herbal medicine. This deliberate selection process sets the tone for a meaningful and intentional practice.

Infuse and Set Intent

Bring your water to a boil and prepare your infusion. As you wait for your herb to steep, open your journal, take a few breaths, and connect to the moment. Clear your mind and get in tune with how you are feeling right now. Begin to write what you notice. What has brought you to this moment today? What are you seeking from this cup of tea? Maybe you want to connect with the plant's magic, or perhaps you just need a moment to yourself. Whatever it may be, write it down. Begin to set the intention of your brew. How are you looking to connect right now? Are you seeking relief of some kind? If so, speak that intent now and let it flow from you as you write.

Sip and Notice

Pour your brew and sit quietly as you take your first sips. Notice the aroma wafting upwards, enveloping you in aromatic steam. Notice the taste. Allow your brew to sit on your tongue and intentionally savor it. Ground yourself in the present. Feel the brew as it enters your belly. Feel its warmth radiating through you. Breath and notice.

Write and Reflect

After sitting in silence for a few moments, begin to write what you have noticed. As you take record of your herb's organoleptic qualities, tune into your body. Notice how your body is feeling. Do you observe any changes or new sensations? Take your time here. Sip and sit. Write when something arises but never force yourself. Allow the connection to self and this plant to develop and deepen.

Close your Ritual

When you feel ready, or when your brew is finished, start to close the ritual. Give gratitude for the moment you just cultivated for yourself. Give gratitude to yourself for taking the time to be present. Give gratitude to the plant you just connected with. I like to end my rituals with one last meditative moment. Hand on heart, eyes closed, I breathe in and give thanks for what I just received. I breathe out and release this energy into an aura that surrounds me, radiating outward. Write out any final thoughts and close your journal.

The Power of Rituals in Connecting Us

Rituals like this are amazing for connecting us to ourselves. They truly align mind, body, and soul, healing as they do. Through consistent practice, these rituals create a sense of harmony and balance that permeates all aspects of our lives. By engaging in these meaningful practices, we cultivate a deeper understanding of our inner selves and the natural world around us. The act of journaling, in particular, becomes a powerful tool for reflection and growth, allowing us to document our journey, track our progress, and celebrate our personal milestones.
