Macerations: A Simple and Effective Extraction Method
Understanding Macerations
Macerations, unlike infusions, require days to weeks to fully extract all constituents, resulting in a potent extract. Due to the intensity of these herbal extractions a small amount is needed to ellicate your dessired effect. These easy-to-create concoctions are typically done at room temperature and are steeped for several weeks. There are two main menstruum choices when creating herbal macerations: alcohol and apple cider vinegar.

Alcohol Menstruum Properties
Alcohol, like water, is a polar solvent capable of extracting polar secondary metabolites. It is prized not only for its extraction abilities but also for its self-preserving properties. Above 20%, alcohol prevents microbial growth. Combining water and alcohol enhances solubility and offers microbial protection. Alcohol effectively breaks down plant cell walls, releasing compounds without requiring heat. Unlike water, it also dissolves oils and resins.
Soluble Constituents:
Volatile oils (essential oils) and terpenes/terpenoids
Fixed oils
Polar secondary metabolites (e.g., chlorophyll)
Tannins
Glycols
Vitamins and some minerals
Some resins
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Menstruum Properties
For those seeking an alcohol alternative, ACV is an excellent choice. This living solvent is full of microbes that assist in breaking down herbs. Macerate over multiple days, ideally for 2-4 weeks for a concentrated extract.
Soluble Constituents:
Polar compounds (secondary metabolites)
Minerals and vitamins
Tannins
Some volatile oils
Plant Parts Suitable for Maceration
Any finely chopped or powdered plant material can be used.
How to Prepare a Maceration
Choose Your Plant Material: Both fresh and dried materials are suitable.
Cover with Menstruum: Place the plant material in a jar and cover it with your chosen menstruum.
Shake Daily: Seal the jar and shake it daily for at least 3 days to facilitate extraction.
Strain and Store: After maceration, strain and press the plant material. Store the tincture in an amber or UV-resistant glass bottle.
